With the the Aussie dollar at a lows to the greenback not seen since the days post GFC and the Northern hemisphere about to enter winter, what better time is there to fly for 2 days to the exact opposite site of the world to Perth?? The great thing about that is you get to choose which way you want to get there. East, West or over the top!*
We tried, unsuccessfully, to get our French fix by heading to Vietnam earlier in the year. But as it turns out aside from the baguettes and a few buildings, there are few other odes to the former colonial overlords. A case of don’t mention the war…or the other one. Except that the other one is mentioned everywhere.
Anyway…after another term of French classes (where we’re not quite ready to order a coffee but if we need to warn anyone about dangers in a national park I’m certainly ready to crank out some subjunctives!) we thought it was time to try another colony. So we’re off to Canada!!
And given we’re going all that way to Canada we thought, “how aboot we go to the US…eh?”
*Spending a week in California and 10 days in Canada might help make the long journey more…bearable, but just to be sure, after an extensive debate, we forked out for some extra leg room!
Debate transcript:
Lea: Do we really need to spend $700 on extra leg room??
James: Do we really need to spend $1000 on lunch??
Lea: Do you really need to spend $1800 on flights to Melbourne the weekend before we leave?
James (26-Sep): Um…is that one rhetorical??
James (1-Oct): That’s a great point, do you think our health insurance will cover emotional trauma??
So won’t you join us once more as we wait with baited breath to see if James manages to recover his sense of humour as we travel through Canada and the US eh?
3000 miles to Florida October 13, 2018 - Our North American adventure began in Palm Springs, which those keen geographers among you (singular) will know is NOWHERE NEAR FLORIDA!! Our friend, Ben, had the brilliant idea to rent a house out for the weekend for 8 Australian adults, one of those small new people and two toddlers. Both little girls were born stateside, … Continue reading 3000 miles to Florida
Chasing the grape October 17, 2018 - After a massive weekend on the booze in Palm Springs, we needed a break. So we flew to San Francisco (aka San Fran, aka Frisco…aka queue looks of disgust from James O) so we could head to wine country. The cause of and solution to all our problems. NB: If you’d ever wondered if a … Continue reading Chasing the grape
BC 2018 AD October 19, 2018 - After a week in the US it was finally time for us to head off alone and explore Canada eh? We were very tempted to stay in the States, but if we didn’t go to Canada we’d need to redo the title of the blog and we ain’t got time for that. First stop, Vancouver, … Continue reading BC 2018 AD
Of Meese and Men October 23, 2018 - So it turns out that the plural of moose isn’t in fact meese as one Canadian lady who tried to take advantage of us in moment of sheer terror would have you believe…I’ll explain later, but other possible post titles included: “The Rockies and Bullwinkle” or “Are you a man or a moose?” Having worried … Continue reading Of Meese and Men
Au Canada October 31, 2018 - From British Canada, where they pretended to tolerate the French side of the dual linguistic nature of the country, to French Canada where it was entirely ignored. Although, having said that, it’s amazing how many of the citizens are fluent in both languages, particularly the younger generation. So much so that it’s actually worse trying … Continue reading Au Canada
Just the tip November 8, 2018 - It took some convincing to get Lea to agree to go to New York for her birthday #firstworldproblems, but within an hour of arriving we were already vowing to never, ever leave Manhattan…for the next 4 days. I guess you could say: ‘it’s my kind of town’…but I think that’s Chicago. Either way it’s a … Continue reading Just the tip
